On a fine but warm and humid Saturday our first outing for 2023 was to Geham National Park.
The Bunya Mountains is 371 km2 of rainforest, eucalypt forests and woodlands, located less than 200km from the eastern coast. At an average height of 975m the forests are cool and verdant and support a huge amount of flora and fauna.
The Bunya Mountains are also one of the world’s Key Biodiversity Areas and we conducted surveys over two days as part of Birdlife’s KBA programme. It was great to contribute to this international programme, and a wonderful way to end the year for our group.

Our sharp-eyed group of nine observers enjoyed a visit to the far north-east part of the Cooby Dam reserve, on a very warm Saturday 26 November. With filling of the dam over the past year or so, interesting waterways and reedy swamps were a feature of this location, as well as the perennial eucalypt-dominated woodland and patchy grassland.

Our second excursion to Ravensbourne National Park as the Darling Downs group took place in balmy weather and spirits were high after so many trip cancellations over the past year or so due to wet weather.

The five BirdLife members approaching Lake Broadwater Conservation Park on Saturday 23 July 2022 wondered if they would even reach the site, given the numerous spots around Dalby where water was running beside or over the roads. However, despite flooded tracks around the southern side of the lake, the group was able to access several areas in the park and enjoyed the fine weather and birding at this special place.

Highfields Falls is always a delight to visit and on a cool overcast day it still held some surprises.
