Lockyer Creek

Juvenile Oriental dollarbird (a long way away!) Photo: Mick Atzeni

This excursion, another joint activity of BirdLife and Toowoomba Bird Observers, attracted a dozen participants on a most pleasant morning.

We visited a private property along the banks of Lockyer Creek, with river pool and bank, open-forest, woodland, and farmland (grazed) habitats.

First-up the group enjoyed sweeping views of the riverine landscape from high sandstone close to the picnic area. Subsequently, we followed the creek some distance downstream with a couple of forays on to the densely vegetated creek bed where a few wetland-associated birds were encountered.

There were no obvious major sources of nectar on this visit and despite 52 bird species identified with full confidence, the bird activity seemed a little less prolific than on a similar group survey almost exactly twelve months earlier. Highlights today included Black-chinned Honeyeater (brief calls recognised only by some of the more experienced participants), Great Cormorant, Pheasant Coucals and young Dollarbirds.
